....repost from mifflincountyliving.com blog dated Aug 16, 2007....
I stopped reading the newspaper about 2 years ago. There wasn’t much to “read” anyhow and I found I was skimming through it in about 5 minutes, if that. I had been utterly disgusted with mainstream radio for quite some time….same reason. The amount of commercials was ridiculous, they all sounded the same, the news was all negative and the dj’s just didn’t seem to have anything to say….not to mention the music has gone down the tubes! Then I stopped watching the news on tv too. Again, too many commercials and all negative. That turned into watching less overall tv programs. If not for TiVo, I wouldn’t turn that darn thing on unless for a rental movie. At least with TiVo you can fast forward through the crap….have you ever stopped to take note how many commercials you view in a 30 minute program. YUK! I counted 13 commercials on average per commercial break. Then, take notice to all the adds on the internet! It’s all garbage. Plain garbage! What are we pounding our brains with…garbage!
Answer this simple question for yourself….when you view, listen to or read the news does it strengthen or weaken you? The overwhelming answer to this question from people of all walks of life is “it weakens me. It’s all terrible things that happen in the world.” So….why do you tune in? Seriously…why? Most say “well, I have to stay informed.” Do you? I can see maybe if you need to keep up on something specific to your career but I’ve found that if there’s something I really need to know, it finds me in one way or another. I can’t begin to tell you how better you will feel once you tune out all that garbage. Yeah, you may experience withdrawal symptoms from not reading The Opinion Line but you’ll be fine before you know it. All that section does is give a place for cowards to shoot their mouths off. If you have to say it in that forum, you shouldn’t be saying it all. Be impeccable with your word. Amazing what it does for your confidence.
Is there a place for tv, radio and news articles? Absolutely! For entertainment and informative reason….but let’s keep it positive for once! Imagine picking up the newspaper and not having to read about the drug problems in your local area, the crime rate or how Betty Lou’s sister got shot by her mothers brother for sleeping with his sisters aunt’s cousin….who the hell cares?!
There’s a well known law of the universe called The Law Of Attraction which basically states that like attracts like. hmmmm….so look at it this way, if you’re reading, viewing and listening to all that garbage you’re putting it out into the universe that that is what you want…that that is what you like. So guess what the universe says, “Well, he/she likes that…we’ll send them more.” And BLAMO….Betty Lou’s sister shows up at your door asking if you’d wanna watch a movie! LOL Well, maybe not exactly like that but if that’s what you’re surrounding yourself with, that is surely what you are attracting.
Now, everyone wants to blame the media and the reporters for the crap out there. Which was it first…the chicken or the egg? Who knows. One thing we do know is that the media largely bases their material on what the people request….or more specific, what the advertisers “tell” them that the people want. Has anyone ever come to your house and asked you what you wanted in the news? Nope. Isn’t the media supposed to be providing a SERVICE for the public? What do you think would happen if suddenly distribution slowed down….less papers being purchased, less radio listened to, etc….well, the advertisers would be concerned because they’re footin’ out all this cash to get their products in front of you so you’ll buy. But you’re tuning out. They’ll want to know why. Tell THEM!
Now, don’t go too far to the other side and request all puppy’s and rainbows in church….that’s a whole different task that I’ll save for another time that is just as damaging.
Be impeccable with your word. Included in that is to be aware of all the garbage you’re putting in your brain. Thoughts become things. For more about being impeccable with your word, I highly recommend reading The Four Agreements by Don Miguel-Ruiz. Here’s a link for your convenience. You will not be disappointed!
Until next time….
